The ideas and creativity are definitely there, the character just isn’t. PRINCE DRAGONSLAYER has potential in terms of plot, but the lack of a strong, likable central character hurts the novel. Because other characters are constantly forced to explain things to Prince as though he were a child the novel is very exposition heavy. A solid character could have saved the novel from its other faults, but by making Prince so selfish and slow, the unnecessarily crass humor and stilted dialogue become more apparent. His delayed acceptance of the new world he’s fallen into, as well as his consistent lack of empathy for others make him incredibly unlikable and thus hard to root for. As a point of view character Prince fails his readers in his simple inability to get with the program. Where the novel falls short is the characters and dialogue. The overall plot of PRINCE DRAGONSLAYER, while dragging at times, is a fun adventure story with plenty of mishaps and strange interactions. The idea of a young man waking up in a foreign place, while not altogether new, is an interesting premise. It begins at childhood and develops gradually over time. As his brother, Ricky, a wizard in training who unlike Prince has no recollection of their former life, drags Prince around this new land, Prince finds himself forced to question who he really is and who he wants to be. The people around him insist he’s always lived there, that Prince’s memory is failing him, but Prince has no idea what they’re talking about.
